  • 小塩先生と生徒たち三大学合同ゼミ参加しました

    大学・研究分野の垣根を越えて 〜三大学合同ゼミ参加記〜 全国の大学が学祭の時期に差し掛かっている中、１１月２日、毎年恒例の大学間交流合同ゼミが行われ、南山大学から平松ゼミと上村ゼミが、立命館大学からは米山ゼミが、そして本学より小塩ゼミが愛知県にある南山大学に集合しました。今自分たちが研究している内容や分析と似ている点・異なる点を可視化することができ、今後の研究に役立つ良い機会となりました。京都や東京という遠方からも、総勢４０名以上の学生・教授が集まり、アツいディスカッションとなりました。学生時代に親交のあった教授方が時を経て、今の学生に交流の場を設けていただいたことは何かの縁であると思います。 トップバッターは上智大学小塩ゼミの富永さんの発表でした。『Wilhelm Heine and Orientalism』という絵画の表現技法における画家の思想を分析するユニークなテーマでした。絵画の注目するポイントもただ見るだけではなく当時の歴史的背景と結び付けていて非常に興味深い内容でした。また絵画はとても視覚的にも理解しやすく、トップバッターらしいプレゼンでした。 二番手は南山大学平松ゼミの三島さんの発表でした。『The Comparison of CFPB and Kinyucho – how are they different? 』というテーマでした。一国の不況が他国にも大きな影響を与えることに非常に興味を持ち、アメリカのCFPBと日本の金融庁との比較はまさしく我々の研究手段である比較研究でした。今後の日本の消費者目線での金融庁の取り組みに期待です。 三番手は南山大学上村ゼミの荻野さんの発表でした。『Analysis of Strategic Defense Initiative, its influence, and Strategies Concerning Nuclear Weapons』というテーマで、戦略防衛構想という通称スターウォーズ計画とも呼ばれるスケールの大きい取り組みについての研究発表でした。軍事計画という国を守る上では欠かせない概念について私自身無知であったので、この機会に日本の軍事計画についても知りたい、知らなければならないと思いました。 最後を締めくくったのは立命館大学米山ゼミの西さんの発表でした。『グローバル化がもたらす先住民族への影響と、彼らが守りたい伝統を先住民族の比較から考える』というテーマで、3年生ながら4年生に負けない研究の濃密さがありました。彼女の趣味でもあるフラダンスについての文化的な伝統についての発表でした。文化が発展する中で先住民が守りたいものと進化させたいもののバランスが難しいと感じました。差別化と平等化この相反する概念が見られる伝統の文化にはまだまだ課題が残っていると感じました。 どのプレゼンを大変内容が濃く、またそれに対しての質疑応答がどのプレゼンにも丁寧で、有意義な時間となりました。ちょっとした疑問でも理解するまで質問し続ける姿勢は学びの本質そのものであると感じました。最後の先生方からのコメントからもわかりましたが、県をまたいで複数のゼミが集まることは貴重であり、毎年受け継がれていることに感謝し、今後も残していきたい伝統だと思いました。合同ゼミから得られた新しい価値観、視点を持ってこれからの研究を進めていきたいです。今回の発表会はまさしく本学が目指す「叡智が世界をつなぐ」という言葉が似合う場所でした。２００８年からの伝統で枠に縛られない研究を広げる一環としてのこの会は、知の上南戦からAcademicなバトルへ進化したように今後も発展し、他のコミュニティを巻き込んだ活動ができることを願っています。 南山大学の上村ゼミ・平松ゼミの皆様、立命館大学の米山ゼミの皆様、この企画に携わって頂いた全ての方々、ありがとうございました。 （報告者：本学科４年望月晴史、亀谷郁）  <続きを読む>

  • Department of English Studies Helper’s Report

    The spring is a busy time for the Department of English Studies Helpers. At the end of March we celebrated the graduating class with a party at the New Otani Hotel. It was a wonderful night of congratulating the senior students on all of their achievements, catching up with classmates and hearing encouraging messages from each of the professors.    Best of luck to all of the class of 2019!   • 上智大学とLoyola Marymount Universityの合同授業

    2019年5月23日に、上智大学にて、Loyola Marymount University（LMU)のCurtiss Tanaka Rooks先生の学生と英語学科飯島ゼミの学生との合同授業が開催されました。LMUの学生は、講義「Asian and Asian American Studies のTrans-Pacific Japan」を受講しており、日米関係や日系人の歴史についてを学んでいます。   今回の合同ゼミでは、LMUの学生全員がそれぞれの研究テーマに関する１０の発表を行い、飯島ゼミ生がコメントや質問をしました。発表内容は「クールジャパンとソフトパワー」、「第二次世界大戦中とその後の日系アメリカ人の歴史」、「ハワイの日本人移民の歴史」についてなど、非常に幅広いトピックで、かつアカデミックにアプローチされたものでした。飯島ゼミ生は、アメリカと日本に関する研究テーマ・分野について新たな知識を多く吸収できたと思います。また、LMU生のプレゼンテーションスキルも勉強になり、今後のプレゼンテーションで是非参考にしていきたいです。   （英語学科３年　宮田望実）      <続きを読む>

  • Announcing Issue 4 of Angles: A Journal of New Writing

      The Department of English Studies is excited to announce the fourth issue of Angles, a student journal of new writing, published in March of 2019. Over the course of four issues, the editorial team at Angles has published close to 100 pieces of student writing. During that time, a dedicated group of student editors have worked to gather material, consult with writers, and design and layout the journal for printing.  The fourth issue contains more than twenty pieces of writing that span a variety of writing genres, including personal essays, senior thesis excerpts, as well as fiction and poetry.     There is a word in Japanese that I really dislike: “IIna”. IIna is said when someone praises others or when one is jealous of another person. The meaning changes depending on how you use it, therefore, the impression of the word differs from person to person. Mine is bad. Luckily, I have spent a few years being told “IIna”. However, the unpleasantness grew through the years and I would like to explain why this happened. I was scouted by a talent agency in Harajuku when I was in Tokyo for a speech contest. I was 15.   • For Fukushima, I Would Like an Answer by Mariko Konno

    I often moved from one place to another within Fukushima prefecture due to my father’s job transfers. We mostly lived in the central area, Fukushima city, located in the north, but also in rural areas such as Onahama and Ono-Ni-Machi, experiencing what Mother Nature had to offer; picking berries in the mountain right outside the backyard, jumping into the river, catching fish and crayfish, and going rice-planting as a school activity. I was always surrounded by mountains and rivers.   • Being Self-Sufficient by Yukari Lewis Ishizuka

    I have lived most of my life in Nagoya, Aichi, where I was continuously educated from the age of 7 of the threat of a big magnitude 8 earthquake, called the Nankai megathrust earthquake. It is said to be the combination of 3 huge earthquakes from the Tokai region to the Kyusyu region. I grew up with the fear of my hometown being totally destroyed with my family underneath it, which caused me to lose sleep from time to time because of nightmares of my grandmother being squashed underneath a huge cupboard in her bedroom or seeing myself struggling for my life in the heavy smoke of a burning building. <続きを読む>

  • Orientation Camp 2018

    From April 5th-6th, the Department of English Studies held orientation camp for all of our 1st-year students. The event was co-organized by our department student helpers and gave the freshman an opportunity to meet one another, learn in more detail about the university and the department, and also have an opportunity to talk with faculty members about their courses.   (During the evening session, faculty members took turns introducing themselves)     (Towards the end of the evening, the student helpers, with a musical assist from Professor Togo, led the group through the school song. )   The camp was a great success!   • 北米研究コース・アジア研究コース卒論発表会報告記

    1月20日に毎年恒例の外国語学部英語学科の卒業論文発表会が行われました。小塩和人先生、出口真紀子先生、石井紀子先生、飯島真里子先生の各ゼミに所属する学生が参加し、総勢20名の2018年度卒業者が論文を発表しました。 まず最初に、卒業論文の内容から歴史、社会問題、文化、アイデンティティ、教育の五つのカテゴリーに分け、一人5分ほどのプレゼンテーションを行われました。具体的に、日本における多文化社会と差別についてや、日系アメリカ人と太鼓の関係など、様々な興味深い論文の内容が発表されました。一つ一つのプレゼンの内容が大変濃い上、発表者の伝えたい要点が整理されていたため発表会が例年よりスムーズに進み、有意義な時間を過ごせました。 最後に先生方から発表に関する講評を頂き、発表会を締めくくりました。今年度は卒業論文執筆者が多く一人当たりの発表時間は限られていましたが、４年生それぞれの論文に対する強い思いが伝わってきました。どの論文も各カテゴリーにおいて今までになかった視点から分析していて，とても刺激的な発表だったと思います。また発表の最後にはこれから卒論を書く３年生に向けてのアドバイスを頂きました。先輩方のアドバイスを胸に研究を進め、常にパッションを持ち、計画的に卒論を書き進めていきたいと思います。 発表者の皆さん、お疲れ様でした。そして素敵な発表をありがとうございました。 （報告者英語学科三年　成田美紅、中山葉月） ＊当日のプログラムはこちらから→卒論発表会2018           発表の様子    集合写真                    <続きを読む>
