Hello everyone! We’re back with a new list of Starting Words. This exercise, again, comes from Professor Marc Kaufman’s Creative Writing class. Hello, incoming freshmen and returning students alike! I hope you are all doing fine and make the most of this time of crisis as positively and optimistically as you can. While we cannot go out and enjoy outside activities as much as we want to, this is in a way a great opportunity for us–not just students but also professors(!)–to do things and learn things that we may not normally have time or energy for. 新入生の皆さん 英語学科で北米研究コースを担当しております小塩和人です。2014年に北米コースが創設されるまではアメリカ研究と称しておりました。今回のミニレクチャーでは、この私（そして上智大学、日本）が、どのようにアメリカと向き合い、研究してきたのか、簡単にご紹介します。その際、強調したいことが二点あります。ひとつは、客観性を目指す学問が主観性を孕んでいる（ので、私の発言も気をつけて聞いて欲しい）こと。ふたつは、客観＝絶対的真実でないのなら、学問を変えていく余地が、貴方にもあること。したがって、高校までの情報受信から、大学での情報発信へと貴方が変わることが期待されているのです。換言すれば「知の創造者」となることが。どうか実り多き大学生活となりますように。対面でお目にかかるのを心より楽しみにしております。 Here is the link to the PDF :Professor Oshio Lecture<続きを読む>

Here is a short lecture from Professor Hidetaka Hirota, a specialist in North American studies. “Hi, everyone! My name is Hidetaka Hirota. I study and teach the history of the United States. In this video clip, I discuss an important topic in American immigration history. The United States has been known as a “nation of immigrants.” While the phrase underscores the tradition of inclusiveness, diversity, and multiculturalism, the US has another important tradition in its immigration history: “nativism,” which can be defined as a strong anti-immigrant sentiment.
