Sophia Journal of Asian, African, and Middle Eastern Studies

Rules for Submission

  1. General Details:
    1. The Sophia Journal of Asian, African, and Middle Eastern Studies is published once a year.
    2. In general we publish brief theses, articles, research notes, fieldwork reports and other material related to Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
    3. Articles submitted will be refereed by more than two scholars, after which their acceptance or rejection will be decided upon by the editorial committee. The editorial committee reserves the right to insist on corrections being made in the articles.
    4. Items for publication will be accepted from the following categories of individuals.
      1. (1) Persons owning membership to the Institute of Asian, African, and Middle Eastern Studies.
      2. (2) All who have acquired membership in the Institute either as Visiting Fellows, Collaborative Fellows, or in some other capacity.
      3. (3) Any other person considered suitable by the Institute.
    5. The deadline for submissions is March 31.
    6. All copyrights will belong to the IAAMES.
    7. The views expressed in the articles need not reflect those of the Institute.
  2. Details Concerning Submissions:
    1. Type of Submissions and Length of Articles
      1. (1) The length of articles should not in principle exceed 9,750 words.
      2. (2) Articles should be typed out using computer software on A4 size paper, and in the case of Japanese articles the sentences should be horizontal. All articles should be submitted electronically (both in Word and PDF format).
      3. (3) Japanese submissions should be accompanied by an English synopsis of about 500 words along with an English title, and in the case of other languages the authors are requested to consult the editor.
      4. (4) Photographs, figures/charts, and tables have to be submitted electronically. Please indicate their size and location in the main text.
    2. Usage of Languages and Notations
      1. (1) For usage of languages other than Japanese or English please consult the editor.
      2. (2) In the case of articles in Japanese, proper nouns in western languages should be presented in katakana after their first appearance in the text.
    3. Endnotes
      1. (1) Only endnotes are permitted, and they are to be inserted using Arabic numerals.
      2. (2) Note numbers appearing in the text are to be placed within brackets using Arabic numerals, as for example… 4
      3. (3) Numbers indicating diagrams, illustrations, maps, and so on should be inserted in brackets using Arabic numerals as for example (Map 1).
    4. Bibliography and References
      Depending on the material, the Bibliography and References may be presented as follows:
      1. (1) In the case of Books:
        Ileto, Reynaldo C., Filipinos and Their Revolution: Event, Discourse, and Historiography, Quezon City: Ateneo de Manila University Press, 1998, pp. 62-71.
      2. (2) In the case of Articles:
        Syed Hussein Alatas, “Intellectual Imperialism: Definition, Traits and Problems,” Southeast Asian Journal of Social Science 28 (1), 2000, pp. 23-46.
      3. (3) Alternately a list of the books used may also be added at the end of the article as follows:

        In cases where the names of authors and editors are not differentiated on the basis of surnames and Christian names, please follow the custom of the country or region the individual belongs to.
    5. Proof Reading
      1. (1) Submissions will be returned twice for proofreading, but subsequent proofreading if deemed necessary, will be carried out by the editorial board.
    6. Remuneration and Offprints
      1. (1) There will be neither any charges levied nor remuneration offered for the submissions.
      2. (2) Authors will receive a printed copy of the journal and a PDF of their article. Offprints are available at cost.
