  • Sophia Graduate Film Accepted at Film Festival

    Yue Ran, who graduated this year from the Department of English Studies  has had her graduation thesis film, Cupboard Girl, accepted at the Orlando International Film Festival. The main cast of this film is played by another 5th year student of our department, Megumi Sakaue. The film will be online from October 30th. Yue’s film was an adaptation of a short story by the British writer, Ian McCewan. Some scenes from the screenplay were published in last year’s Angles.   • Faculty Spotlight: Department Chair, Professor Noriko Ishii, a specialist in American Studies and American Women’s History.

    Professor Noriko Ishii is the chair of the Department of English Studies. She lived in San Francisco for four years during elementary school. Those experiences lingered with her after coming back to Japan and she continued to concentrate on studying English, eventually entering our own Department of English Studies at Sophia University. After graduating from Sophia University, she completed MPhil and PhD programs at George Washington University while raising her children.   • Announcing Issue 5 of Angles: A Journal of New Writing

    The Department of English Studies is excited to announce the fifth issue of Angles, a student journal of new writing, published in March of 2020. Over the course of five issues, the editorial team at Angles has published more than 100 pieces of student writing. During that time, a dedicated group of student editors worked to gather material, consult with writers, and design and layout the journal for printing. The fifth issue is our largest, most ambitious issue yet!     Hello Everyone! The start of the semester is fast approaching, and the faculty is looking forward to welcoming you into our online classes very soon. We know it has been difficult for everyone without a traditional Orientation Camp, so we thought we would host Zoom sessions for our 1st-year students. This way, you can meet some of the faculty for your compulsory courses and get information about classes before the start of the semester.
