SIAS-IAAMES joint screening of Algerian Film
143 Sahara Street
as a part of Sophia Open Research Weeks 2023

The Institute of Islamic Area Studies at Sophia University, in collaboration with the Institute of Asian, African, and Middle Eastern Studies will host screening of the Algerian-Qatari-French co-production documentary film 143 Sahara Street (2019) on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.
Featuring Malika, who has been running a café along a highway in the Sahara for many years, the documentary film depicts her daily life to deepen our understanding of the Sahara and North African society from her perspective. After watching the film, Masatoshi Kisaichi, Professor Emetrius of Sophia University, will give an explanation of the Algerian society that forms the background of the film.

In addition to this, the Institute of Islamic Area Studies is preparing an on-demand lecture series "Transmission of Sacredness in Islam: Prophet’s Family, Saints’ Descendants, and Holy Relics" to be offered on Monday, November 13 and Monday, November 20, in collaboration with the Kenan Refai Center for Sufism Studies, Kyoto University. We hope you will join us there as well.
