現在はどこで、どのようなお仕事をなさっていますか。 『TOP CAREER』というブランドで、世界中の優秀な若者の海外挑戦を支援するとともに、企業や教育機関が世界中から優秀な人材を獲得する支援を事業としています。私たちの強みは、エリアを限定せず世界中で展開している事、ユーザーは留学・就職・転職と、ライフステージのどこからでも挑戦できることです。現在の我々のクライアントは日本の企業や大学がメインですが、創業時から「世界中に挑戦する機会を提供できるプラットフォームを作る」のが我々の目指している姿なので、より国際的に展開したいです。 英語学科で学んでよかったと思うことは何ですか。 自分よりも英語ができる人はいくらでもいると実感できたこと、様々なバックグラウンドを持つ仲間に出会えたこと、そして、自分の意見を持ち、発言することの大切さを学んだことです。 在学中に一番印象に残っている体験は何ですか。 「一番」ということなのですが、２つあります。1つ目は、今は亡きJohn Deely先生の日英手話の授業。手話にも言語があるという、考えてみたらあたりまえだろうことを全く知らなかった自分に気づき、「伝える」「理解する」ということの意味について考えるきっかけになりました。もう１つは課外活動。私は体育会サッカー部のマネージャーをしていました。何かに必死に全身全霊をかけてうちこむことの素晴らしさを感じ、また、一生の仲間を得ることができました。 なぜ、現在の職場を選んだのですか？ 私の場合は職場を選ぶというより、起業の一員となるという選択でしたが、そこには様々な要素が絡んでいたなと今振り返ると思います。「人」（上智の英語学科出身の社長です！）、「時」（タイミング、年齢）、「人生観」。「人生観」というと、大げさなのですが、起業の話があったときに、自分がその時思ったことです。人生振り返ったときにたとえ失敗に終わったとしても、何か「やった」という話をできるのってカッコイイな、と。  「英語」の必要性がますます高まっていますが、それについてどのように感じていますか？ 今の時代は英語ができることは特別な事ではなく、もはや「あたりまえ」となってきています。そんな中、英語学科出身の人間として、より高い言語能力を持つだけでなく、それを使って何を発信していくか、何を成し遂げていくか、が大事なことだと考えています。  今後の夢をお聞かせください。 今の会社をスケールアップさせること。世界中に「フォースバレー」「TOP CAREER」の名前が浸透し、その名前の意味するものイコール「世界中の若者の海外挑戦」のイメージを浸透させたいです。自分達が行っている事業がこれからの世界を変えていく一つの原動力になればと思っています。そして、会社がスケールアップできたら、家族と1年の半分くらいは海外のいろんな場所で悠々自適に過ごしながら、常に新しい刺激を受けられるような生活がしたいな、なんて夢見ています（笑）。 ※竹田さんは、Forbes Japan Women Awardのホームページでも紹介されていますので、是非ご覧ください。こちらから     写真１：竹田さんご本人       写真２：お子さんを連れてプレゼンしている様子      <続きを読む>

Department of English Studies faculty member, Professor Mitsuyo Sakamoto, has recently published her new co-edited book detailing the history of the TESOL programme at Sophia University.  Last year marked the tenth anniversary of the programme and the book looks at the challenges involved in creating the individual courses and the success the program has had training teachers “devoted to Foreign Language Education.”   In publishing the book, Professor Sakamoto and the other professors involved, aim to share the core ideas of the TESOL programme at Sophia University with a larger community of educators.
