Mini Lecture Series: US Immigration History

Here is a short lecture from Professor Hidetaka Hirota, a specialist in North American studies.

“Hi, everyone! My name is Hidetaka Hirota. I study and teach the history of the United States. In this video clip, I discuss an important topic in American immigration history.

The United States has been known as a “nation of immigrants.” While the phrase underscores the tradition of inclusiveness, diversity, and multiculturalism, the US has another important tradition in its immigration history: “nativism,” which can be defined as a strong anti-immigrant sentiment. In the video, I introduce the notion of nativism and how it applied to some immigrant groups in the past. Nativism is one of the major social and political problems in the United States today, but it is also deeply rooted in the nation’s history.”
