【CLIL Workshop Series 10 】 Designing CLIL Materials with “The Brain” and “Literacy” in Mind

In this Workshop, we will “be students”, and experience learning using CLIL materials which have been designed with the brain and productive literacy in mind. We will also occasionally stop and “be teachers”, to review what cognitive neuroscience research tells us about how the brain learns, or not.  In fact, it should concern us that CLIL, especially at post-primary levels, actually means “the learning of complex unfamiliar Content through an oftentimes not-so-familiar foreign language”, clearly not a very brain-friendly learning situation. Thus, the need to design more “brain-aware CLIL instruction” which harness our brain’s ability to learn implicitly as well as its natural state of enjoying learning (yes, you read that correctly). And, if we can also strategize the CLIL-foreign-language so that it facilitates, rather than blocks, the comprehension of complex concepts, even better! One way to achieve this challenging endeavour is to remember that, at the end of the day, education, CLIL or not, must develop students’ discipline-specific productive literacy/ies. To understand what this means, we will also “be 4-year-old non-Anglophone toddlers” and experience how CLIL-instruction quite naturally develops our early maths-literacy skills, all because our family hopes to amplify our English vocabulary before we can even read.

【音声学研究室講演会】歌唱法と音響的特徴(Singing techniques and their acoustic characteristics)

歌唱では,声帯振動,声道形状を制御して,歌唱スタイルにおいて必要とされる音響ターゲットを実現する.本講演では,通常の音声発声を参照しつつ,オペラ歌唱をはじめとする幾つかの歌唱スタイルについて音響的特徴について概説し, 生理物理的特徴との関連について述べる. For different singing styles, vocal fold vibration and vocal tract shape are controlled to achieve the required acoustic targets. In this presentation, I will provide an overview of the acoustic characteristics of several singing styles, including Operatic singing and others, while referring to speech production, and discuss their relationship with physiological and physical characteristics

言語学講演会 Language learning in informal digital contexts: affordances and limitations

The unstoppable technological dissemination (Internet, mobile phones, apps) is causing significant transformations in language teaching. Nowadays, learners have more options to learn on their own, informally, through leisure activities (video games, fan subbing, music, fanfic), by contacting native speakers or taking advantage of available tools (search engines, translators, assisted writers, artificial intelligence). Teachers also harness these resources to provide more digital materials (multimodal, self-corrective, question consultation, more current or suitable input, etc.), but today we are less relevant than few decades ago. These changes also gradually modify the roles of learner and teacher. The former gains more prominence, autonomy, freedom, and responsibility, while the latter increasingly becomes a tutor, counselor, or supervisor and less of a lecturer or evaluator. Based on real case studies and empirical data (Spaniards who learn Korean by listening to K-pop and watching K-drama; young Chinese who translate and comment with danmu on Hispanic television series; European adults learning Spanish by dancing salsa; teenagers improving their English by playing video games; Hispanic transnational video creators in Douyin), we will reflect on these changes and offer present and future orientations.
