Event Summary

The Knights of Malta (or Knights of St. John of Jerusalem) were members of an Order born in Holy Land during the Crusades. As soldier-monks, they observed five vows: chastity, obedience, poverty, hospitality, and holy war. In the 16th and 17th centuries, they managed their fiefdom of Malta and led the Crusade against the Muslims (Turks and Barbary corsairs) in the Mediterranean through maritime war and corso. They transformed Malta into the frontier of Christendom, as a fortified place of Catholic religious purity.
