A preview  screening of the film Another Time, produced by Professor John Williams of the European Institute (Department of English Studies, Faculty of Foreign Studies)

A preview screening of the film Another Time, directed by Professor John Williams of the European Institute (Department of English Studies, Faculty of Foreign Studies), will be held at Sophia University Yotsuya campus on December 14th from 18.00 in the Library. The film won the Best Fantasy Film Award at the Galactic Imaginarium Film Festival in Rumania earlier this year and has been selected for festival screenings in Spain, China, India and Mexico so far.

Another Time is based on the famous radio play Under Milk Wood, set in a small fishing village in Wales, and incorporates legends and folklore from Sado Island (Kitaushima in Niigata Prefecture.

John Williams, is originally from Wales, UK, and came to Japan in 1988. He has written and directed award-winning films such as Firefly Dreams(2001)Starfish Hotel(2006)Sado Tempest(2012), and The Trial(2019). His two most recent works were both filmed in Kitaushima Village, located on the northern tip of Sado Island. One is a documentary titled, North Cormorant Island, the Squid and Pine  which was filmed over the past 10 years. The other is Another Time, which portrays the culture and folklore of the village with puppet shows and live actors.

Professor Shin’ichi Murata (Department of Russian Studies, Faculty of Foreign Studies), a Fellow of our Institute, gave a lecture on Noh in Verona and Milan, Italy last month.  And it was published in the magazine PANTHEON.

Information: Summer recess of the University Offices

 

With regard to the summer recess for all the offices of University, the European Institute will be closed for the following date:

Aug.12th (Thurs.) – 18th (Wed.), 2021

 

The Institute will also be closed on the 4th (Wed.), 5th (Thurs.), 25th (Wed.) and 26th (Thurs.).  In addition, the it will be closed at 15:00 on the 6th (Fri.) , and at 14:00 on the 10th (Tues.) .

Visit of the Ambassador of Austrian Embassy Tokyo and the Director of Austrian Cultural Forum

 

  • On 14th July 2021, Ambassador of Austrian Embassy Tokyo, H.E. Mrs. Elisabeth Bertagnoli, and the Director of Austrian Cultural Forum, Mr. Mario Vielgrader visited the European Institute.  Every year, the Austrian Embassy donates books to our Institute, which is added to the Austrian Section of our Library, and we also organize events co-hosted by the Austrian Cultural Forum.  Upon their visit, the administrative staff briefly introduced overall activities of the Institute, and Mr.Erich Havranek (Visiting Fellow of the Institute) gave them further information on the Austrian Section of the Library, which is a collection of about 4,500 books on literature and culture.
