ABSTRACTS

This study seeks to investigate how Japanese high school students and teachers perceive the English found in Japan before and after using authentic materials drawn from the Japanese linguistic landscape (referred to as Authentic Japanese English Materials (AJEM)). Semi-structured interviews conducted before and after using the AJEM were used to measure teacher perceptions of English in Japan. Student perceptions of English in Japan were investigated using a questionnaire composed of seven Likert-scale items divided into two constructs: perceptions of the amount of English in Japan, and value judgments of Japanese English. Although no statistical difference was found in student perceptions before and after using the AJEM, responses to individual items relating to student perceptions of the amount of English found in Japan, showed a trend towards an increase in this perception. Teachers, however, felt that there was a limited amount of English available in Japan and also expressed reservations about the quality of this English. Despite these reservations, teachers were enthusiastic about using the AJEM in current and future lessons, which points toward a place in the English language classroom for authentic materials originating from EFL environments.
