This paper proposes a new theory of linearization called “the PF head parameter.” It is argued that this theory is superior to current theories of linearization that impose universal word order. It is pointed out that the proposed theory captures a missing typological generalization under the current theories. Also, it is suggested that the new theory is free from unmotivated movements which make narrow syntax (NS) complicated. Also, this theory correctly predicts various differences between Japanese and English.
