This paper discusses a construction in which a semantically subordinate motion event is induced by certain path expressions, with reference to Japanese and English. Specifically we deal with NP-made in Japanese and all the way PP and from A to B in English. We will argue that such directional expressions are originally used as arguments of directed motion verbs like go and then extended to the construction at issue, in which they are interpreted as adjuncts. Thus, the construction is said to have arisen as a by-product of those path expressions.
