ABSTRACTS

Prior studies have reported that the low self-efficacy of false beginners in learning English
prevents them from improving their skills. Learners who need remedial education lack
basic grammatical knowledge. However, a combination of traditional lecture and excisecentered
teaching method could be a counterproductive measure.
Based on the theory by Bandura (1977), the purpose of this study is to investigate whether
the two kinds of shadowing enhance the self-efficacy of false beginners in a grammar
course comprising 15 classes.
During the first half of the period, solo shadowing is conducted, where the participants
perform shadowing alone to review a grammar point they have just learnt and keep
journals about their own performance. During the latter half, the participants perform
shadowing in pairs and give feedback on their partner’s performance.
Data from two kinds of questionnaire, six-scale and open-ended, are quantitatively
and qualitatively analyzed, thereby implying that shadowing had been useful in the
improvement of self-efficacy of the participants toward grammar leaning; additionally, the
paired shadowing might be one of the beneficial trainings for beginners in improving their
self-efficacy.
