6/7~24 ”The Curaçao Visa – Dutch Consul Zwartendijk and the hidden origins of Visas for Life” Photo exhibition
During Europe's World War II era many people could only save their own lives by fleeing. In
order to send Jewish refugees to safety and allow them to live in another country, they needed
a visa for their final destination. At the time, Jan Zwartendijk, the Honorary Consul of the
Netherlands in Lithuania, issued a make-believe destination visa to the Dutch island of
Curaçao. Japanese Consul Chi’une Sugihara issued a 'visa for life' on the basis of that visa.
Thanks to these visas, thousands of Jews were saved from persecution and death. In addition
to the panel exhibition, the exhibition also features photographs of the period.
