Mahathir Mohamad and the Unforeseen Transformation of Malaysian Politics
「マハティール・モハマドとマレーシア政治の予期せぬ変容」
Keynote Speech Synopsis
Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, twice Prime Minister of Malaysia (1981- 2003 and 2018- 2020)has long held clear and firm ideas of modernizing and transforming Malaysia. During his first and long tenure in office, he introduced many economic and social policies that he hoped would change the ways Malaysians thought and acted. Not all the changes brought the results that he expected. Nor did people respond to them in the ways that he preferred. In fact, there was considerable opposition to his rule, ideas and policies for much of the time that he was in power. While he strove for political stability his years in power were full of crises, some of which lay beyond his control. An unforeseen transformation of Malaysian politics, it will be explored in this seminar, arose from the complex interplay between Mahathir’s ideas and policies, the conditions in which they were propagated or implemented, and the popular responses to them.
