| 報告 | サラ・グリフィス先生をお招きし、“In Search of Justice: Liberal Protestant Activism and Japanese American Civil Rights, 1900-1950”という題目でお話しいただきました。本講演は、20世紀前半に日系アメリカ人のために闘ったリベラルプロテスタントについてのお話です。グローバルヒストリーの日米関係はこれまで政治的エリートに注目がなされてきましたが、先生は草の根運動に注目します。リベラルプロテスタントであるJohn Davisは日本で生まれアメリカで教育を受けたのちに再び日本に戻り、YMCAの理事に就任します。同じくリベラルプロテスタントのGelen FisherもDavisを手伝いYMCA創設に貢献します。当時、新たな機会を求めてアメリカへ移住した日本人移民の多くが農民として働き始め、日系アメリカ人コミュニティが形成された一方で、アメリカではアジア系移民に対する反感が高まっていました。1924年にはImmigration Actが制定され日系移民が排斥されるなど、1920年代において日系アメリカ人は経済的、社会的、道徳的にアメリカの脅威であるとみなされていたのです。こうした状況に衝撃を受けたDavisとFisherは、Survey of Race Relationsや、The Institute of Pacific Relationsの設立に携わり、国家間の相互理解に助力しました。日系人たちの間でも1980年代を通して権利獲得に向けた運動が繰り広げられ、日系人収容から40年後にレーガン大統領がCivil Liberties Actに署名することになります。 太平洋横断の歴史においては日系移民など人の移動だけでなく、思想の移動も生じていたことが分かり、公民権をめぐる思想の形成について理解が深まりました。質疑応答では、日本におけるリベラルプロテスタンティズム形成の背景や、リベラルプロテスタントが仏教などの非キリスト教徒に対してはどのように考えていたのかなど、学生から多くの質問が寄せられました。（報告：英米文学研究科博士後期課程 三原里美） 参加人数：約100名 |

| 要旨 | From the early 1900s through World War II Japanese immigrants faced discrimination in the United States. Land laws and Supreme Court cases prevented members of the first generation from owning land or becoming citizens. Japanese American youth born in the United States were frequently denied access to the same opportunities as white Americans. In the 1940s more than 100,000 Japanese Americans were removed from their homes without trial and placed in internment camps in the name of “national security.” In her presentation, Associate Professor of History and Fulbright Scholar Sarah Griffith will explore the efforts of American liberal Protestants who worked to combat the injustices Japanese Americans faced across the first half of the twentieth century and consider the impact their activism had on the broader history of American civil rights movements. |
