The Brazilian Government and the Institutionalization of Brazilian Communities Abroad
During the month of January of 2014, I conducted a field trip in the city of Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. The main goal of my research was to gather documents related to the Brazilian government’s stance towards Brazilian citizens living abroad, especially those living in Japan, in order to better understand role played by that government and Brazilian diplomatic representations overseas in the developing of new policies towards these immigrants. In my search of such documents I visited the libraries of the University of Brasilia, the National Congress and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I was able to find important books and reports related to the Brazilian government’s activities abroad and the changes in Brazilian foreign policy related to immigrants.
Another goal of my field trip was to collect information related to Japanese immigrants and new trends in terms of recruiting of Japanese descendants in Brazil. During my visit of my alma mater, the University of Brasilia, a professor at the Department of Japanese Language and Literature was kind enough to take part in an interview regarding the Japanese-Brazilian community in Brasilia. I also visited Japanese-Brazilian associations and conducted interviews with different members of those associations. The valuable information that I was able to gather will help understand the recent demonstration of a higher interaction between the Brazilian community in Japan and local society, as well as clarify the role of the Brazilian government in that process.
