This study investigated the relationship between development of explicit / implicit
knowledge and level of saliency. 20 JSL (Japanese as second language) learners whose
level is upper-beginner participated in this study. Untimed grammaticality judgement test
and oral narrative test were used to measure explicit / implicit knowledge. The results of
statistical analysis revealed that the development of explicit knowledge of less salient form
is significantly lower than that of more salient form. The data also indicated that learners
acquired implicit knowledge of less salient form even though they had little explicit
knowledge.
