June 7, Symposium “The Visas for life, the spirit of the UN and the commitment of the Netherlands”
Minister Plenipotentiary of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Theo Peters will talk
about the Dutch consul in Kaunas Jan Zwartendijk who during the Second World War, together
with Japanese consul Chiune Sugihara, was able to rescue thousands of Jewish refugees by
issuing what was become known as the Visas for life. Their motives can be extrapolated to the
founding principles of the United Nations and its Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Peters
will also explain the importance of the UN for the Netherlands.
