The research paper discussing educational support for refugees from the perspective of human security has been published in an internationally renowned journal.

The paper on refugee education was co-authored by two SIHS members, Professor Taro Komatsu (Department of Education, Faculty of Human Sciences) and Dr Kaoru Ghalawinji-Yamamoto. It was published in the International Journal of Comparative Education and Development in collaboration with an international NGO.

The paper explores how to support the learning of Syrian refugee children in a prolonged and complex crisis from the standpoint of human security. In Jordan, the primary host country for Syrian refugees, the international NGO World Vision has implemented remedial education targeting low-achieving Syrian children. Utilizing program evaluation data and results from field research conducted by both Komatsu and Yamamoto, the paper argues for the realization of continued learning and empowerment for vulnerable refugee children through the establishment of a safe learning environment and instructional methods that stimulate learning motivation and improve academic performance. The aim is to increase the future options for these children and enhance their security in life.
