Symposium : Why Primary Health Care (PHC) is important in progress towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) – perspectives from Asia and Africa, being held on Novemver 5th

Universal Health Coverage – equitable access to needed, quality health services without the risk of financial catastrophe or impoverishment associated with obtaining care - is one of the 169 targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While there is evidence that a strong PHC system contributes to improved access to health care, there has been much debate on how best to: organize PHC within a country’s health system, mobilize resources to finance PHC, and purchase PHC services to improve health systems performance. This symposium brings together health administrators, researchers, community health practitioners from Asia and Africa to discuss approaches to PHC in a number of countries, and the opportunities and challenges for strengthening PHC in light of UHC and SDGs.
