Beyond Cool Japan: The Special Role of Japan in Saudi Modernity and Reform

Despite the vast changes in Saudi culture and society in recent years, the scholarly literature on both remains limited. This speech aims to start to fill this gap, highlighting an organic cultural and social phenomenon that has existed for decades alongside government programs, such as Cool Japan. Ultimately, this speech aims to provide a new vision of Saudi culture, one which taps into what Saudi filmmaker Hisham Fageeh calls a "digital Pangea".
