Seminar, On the Way to Mecca in the 19th and early 20th centuries: a modernized sacred journey, will be held on Febuary 26th.

Institute of Asian, African, and Middle Eastern Studies and Center for Islamic Studies at Sophia University invite Sylvia Chiffoleau (CNRS France), and hold a research seminar on the modern history of pilgrimage to Mecca.
Sylvia Chiffoleau is historian affiliated to the Laboratoire de Recherche historique Rhone-Alpes (LARHRA) in Lyon (France). Her field of study is the history of modern Arab societies (19th-20th centuries), focusing on health issues, pilgrimage mobility and the evolution of time conceptions. She has published in 2015 a book about the pilgrimage to Mecca during the colonial period: Le Voyage a La Mecque. Un pelerinage mondial en terre d'islam (Paris, Belin).
In this seminar, she will talk about the transformations of the pilgrimage to Mecca in the XIX century and the beginning of XX century with the development of transport, and its impact on health, epidemic risk, and the health controls.
