Islamic Area Studies Collection

This is a collection of books relating to society, history, religion, politics and culture, etc., in Muslim-inhabited areas in the world, which have been collected since the launching of the NIHU Islamic Area Studies in 2006. It includes a large number of books written in Arabic, Indonesian and Malay, etc., aside from those written in European languages. These books are deposited at the Institute of Asian, African, and Middle Eastern Studies Library (Room 612 on the 6th floor of the Central Library). You can search them using the Sophia University system.

Southeast Asian Kitab Collection

The collection consists of over 1800 titles of printed kitabs (Islamic books) written in the Malay-Indonesian and other Southeast Asian languages using the Arabic script (Jawi) as well as those written in the Arabic language and published or used in Southeast Asia. These materials were collected as a part of the research activities of the study group on Muslims in Southeast Asia at the Center for Islamic Area Studies at Sophia University. It constitutes one of the worldfs largest collections of these sorts of materials, and provides a valuable resource for research both within and outside this Institute. This collection is deposited at the Institute of Asian, African, and Middle Eastern Studies Library (Room 612 on the 6th floor of the Central Library). Garcia Collection (Related collection)

The Sophia Central Library houses a collection totaling 6,951 items called the “Mauro Garcia Collection,” which includes 5,320 titles of books, periodicals, and other documents relating to the Philippines. It was collected by the Filipino bibliographer Mauro Garcia (1906 - 1982), and encompasses an exhaustive range of literature relating to the Philippines from the latter half of the 19th century through to the 1970s. For example, it includes prayer books used in Catholic churches in the 19th century, several hundreds of works relating to Jos Rizal, tourist guidebooks from the first half of the 20th century, as well as a number of primary documents concerning the Japanese occupation.

You can search this collection using the Sophia University OPAC system. These materials are for viewing within the library only and may not be photo-copied because they are valuable books and many of them are fragile.
