In this revealing documentary, San Jose State University professor Hien Doc Do returns to his homeland, Viet Nam, for the first time since 1975 to ponder his country’s attempts to deal with its painful historical legacy and to make the transition to a more capitalistic economy. Through interviews with scholars, historians, sociologists, merchants, rural workers and students, Hien investigates how his country’s current socio-economical trajectory has affected the national educational and health systems, family dynamics, the role of women and the national self-esteem.
