Summary

In 1942, following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, 8,000 California residents of Japanese ancestry, the majority of them U.S. citizens, were incarcerated for up to six months at a San Bruno race track. Tanforan was quickly converted to barracks, with some people forced to live in horse stalls. The documentary explores how those inside the assembly center built a sense of community and adjusted to the adversity. This period of fear and uncertainty was followed by relocation to camps in the interior of the country on grounds of national security. Many remained imprisoned until the end of the war. Families lost homes, businesses and life savings as a result of the years in detention.
