｢娘は父に服従する。妻は夫に服従する。未亡人は息子に服従する｣――昔から繰り返されてきた伝統的な隷属の物語を英語で語るヴェトナムの女たち。ヴェトナム戦争の悲惨な記憶、そして解放後もつづく支配される性としての女の過酷な状況――。だがそれは私的な体験を語ったものではなく、女優が再現代行したものだということが映画の途中で明らかにされる。他者の言語によって語られた「サバルタンの体験」を仮構すること、この二重の操作によってトリンはリアリティとは何か、ドキュメンタリーとは何かを見るものに問いかけている。

Summary

"Daughters obey their fathers. Wives obey their husbands. Widows obey their sons." This is the traditional narrative of subservience that has been repeated for generations by Vietnamese women. The harsh reality of women as a dominated gender persists not only in the tragic memories of the Vietnam War but also in the post-liberation era. However, it is revealed during the course of the film that these stories are not personal experiences but rather reenactments performed by actresses. Through constructing a fictionalized account of "subaltern experiences" told in a language other than their own, Trinh's film raises questions about the nature of reality, what constitutes a documentary, and the dual manipulation at play.
