悠久の歴史を持つ「儒教の国」中国と毛沢東の築いた「共産主義国」中国、この二つが同居する「謎に満ちた国」現代中国。それは、九種の獣の姿を借りた龍のようなものだ。箱の中身を当てる中国の謎々遊びをタイトルにしたこの映画は、極大にして極小、とらえどころのない両義的な幻想の生き物「中国」というブラックボックスの中身＝確認を探る試みだといえよう。天安門事件によって変わったものは何か、不変のものは？政治とは、民衆とは、映画製作とは？「目に見えるよりも多くのことが存在し、見えるものが真実とは限らない」。境界線上で試行するトリンが現代中国を「異邦人」の目でとらえた多声的ドキュメンタリー。

Summary

Modern China, a country with the enduring history of Confucianism and the communism established by Mao Zedong, is a mysterious coexistence of these two. It is like a dragon borrowing the forms of nine different animals. This film is an attempt to explore the contents—confirmation—of the black box called 'China,' a creature of elusive and dualistic fantasy, both vast and minute, with no clear grasp. What the Tiananmen Square incident brought about changes, and what remains unchanged? What is politics, what is the populace, what is filmmaking? 'There is more than meets the eye, and what is visible may not be the truth.' Trinh's documentary attempts to perceive contemporary China through the eyes of 'foreigners' on the borderlines, capturing its multiple perspectives.
