The moving and heroic stories of Japanese Americans who have served in the military are still little known to the American public. Japanese American National Museum's mission includes sharing and preserving the story of Japanese American veterans for future generations. Toward that goal, the Museum has created a major new exhibition, "Fighting For Tomorrow: Japanese Americans in America's Wars" which opened to the public in the Main Exhibit Hall of the Japanese American National Museum on November 10, 1995 and will be on view until January 1997. Earlier this year, the Japanese American Veterans Association (JAVA) of Washington, D.C. and the Department of Veterans Affairs approached the Museum to assist in the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the end of the World War II. JAVA had encouraged the Department of Veterans Affairs to include an event spotlightning the contributions of Japanese Americans in a series of national commemorative events taking place between 1991 to 1995.
