女性誌の編集のかたわら写真のモデルをして、ヴェトナムにいる家族に仕送りをつづけるフリーランス・ライター、キュウを通じて、アメリカに移住したヴェトナム移民(ディアスポラ)の体験を描く初の長編劇映画。キュウは二つの文化や感情の違いの狭間を漂いつつ、19世紀の女キュウ――ヴェトナムの国民的な愛の詩歌「金雲翹伝」の、家族のために娼婦となった薄幸の女――の立場を敷衍していく。スタジオでキュウに透明なヴェールを被せて神秘に包まれた姿を撮る写真家アリカン。映画は、カメラの眼と観客の眼の双方にある<窃視症的な視線>を明るみにだしていく。
This is a description of the first feature film depicting the experiences of Vietnamese immigrants (diaspora) who have moved to the United States. The film follows Kyuu, a freelance writer who, alongside editing a women's magazine, also models for photographs. While continuing to send money to her family in Vietnam through Kyuu, the film explores the intersection of two cultures and the differences in emotions.
Kyuu navigates the space between these cultures, and the narrative extends to the 19th-century character of Kyuu, a tragic woman who became a prostitute for the sake of her family in the nationally beloved Vietnamese poem "Golden Clouds Adrift." The film captures Kyuu's position, drawing parallels between the two women. Photographer Alikhan, who covers Kyuu with a transparent veil in the studio, adds an air of mystery to the visuals. The movie sheds light on the voyeuristic gaze present in both the camera's lens and the audience's perspective.
