| 報告 | Jonathan Okamura先生をお招きし、“Racing the Death Sentence in Territorial Hawai`i”という題目で、準州時代ハワイにおける死刑と人種との関わりについてお話しいただきました。死刑制度が存在していた準州時代、殺人を犯したハオレ（白人）のうち処刑されたのは1人のみで、ハワイ先住民もまた、政治的提携を理由にハオレに救われ、1人を除いて処刑された者はいませんでした。一方で白人少年を殺した罪に問われた日系アメリカ人が死刑に処されたのは、ハオレが日本人を政治的、経済的脅威とみなしていたためでした。同様に、準州時代に処刑された人の多くがフィリピン人でしたが、これはフィリピン人を暴力的で、危険で、衝動的であるとみなして悪魔化する動きと関わっていました。 こうした中、強姦、殺人の罪に問われたMajorsとPalakikoの処刑に反対する多民族運動が組織され、減刑に成功したことが転機となります。1954年に民主党員が準州議会において支配権を得ると、主にハオレ以外の人々が議員や党の支持者、立候補者を構成することとなり、人種的平等のための多文化への動きが加速します。1957年にはMajorsとPalakikoの処刑に反対したグループを支持者として、日系アメリカ人によって死刑の完全廃止を求める請願書が提出されるに至りました。死刑執行の実情を探ることで、準州時代ハワイにおいて権力や人種差別的思想がいかに働いていたかが明らかになりました。 質疑応答では、日系人が処刑された後に日本人コミュニティによって建立された石碑に書かれている「因果」の意味について議論が交わされるなど、良い意見交換の場になりました。（報告：英米文学研究科博士後期課程 三原里美） 参加人数：約40名 |

| This lecture analyzes the relation between race and capital punishment in Hawai‘i during the territorial period. It discusses how race, as the dominant principle of social organization, resulted in only one Haole (White) and one Native Hawaiian being executed, although many others from both groups committed homicide. Race also contributed to Filipinos and Koreans being greatly overrepresented among those hanged. I argue that race was deployed by Haoles against most non-Haole minorities to have those accused of homicide to be charged with and convicted of first degree murder, which had a mandatory death sentence. In addition, Haoles could prevent individuals from their group and Kanaka (Native Hawaiians) from being executed. Also discussed is how race, as evident in the Majors-Palakiko murder and rape case, was a primary factor in ending capital punishment in 1957. This occurred after the Democrats, whose elected officials and supporters were predominantly non-Haole, took control of the territorial legislature from the Haole-dominated Republicans in 1954. | |
