"The Crusades in Relation to Present Day: Europe, the Middle East, and Japan"
The 34th Japan Association for Middle East Studies (JAMES) Annual Meeting (co-organized by NIHU Area Studies Project for the Modern Middle East, Center for Islamic Studies (Sophia University), organized by Japan Association for Middle East Studies (JAMES), and cooperated by the Faculty of Global Studies) hold a symposium titled "The Crusades in Relation to Present Day: Europe, the Middle East, and Japan".
【Abstract】
The Crusades constitute a historical encounter involving the European and Islamic worlds. Yet, this encounter not only engendered an enhancing of their economic and cultural links, one might say it served also as a means for people of both worlds to accept and concede the concept of “others” and their mutual existence. Later however the concept was divorced from its historical context, and associated in a variety of ways with politics, economics, and culture. In this lecture, we shall discuss the problems associated with the Crusades, both as historical events and contemporary issues.
