Karel Steenbrink氏講演会「Religion in Independent Indonesia, 1945-2014...」が2014年10月24日(金）に開催されます。

Besides age, gender and ethnic origin, religious adherence is not only a personal but also a public affair in modern Indonesia. This is seen in many practices of the public administration without opting for a religion Indonesian citizens cannot obtain an identity card, passport or driver’s licence, because religion must have been mentioned since the beginning of Soeharto’s New Order. This has consequences for many other public acts, and makes religion not only a private but also a public affair. In this presentation I give a panorama of this public face of the Indonesian religions, especially looking through the spectacles of Catholic participants and observers.
The lecture focuses on Pancasila as an important instrument for the interreligious harmony of religions in Indonesia. In the debate for the 1945 Constitution of Independent Indonesia the Pancasila Ideology was coined as a compromise between an Islamic and a secular State. For the position of religion in the country Pancasila has been an important instrument. In the courses of various stages of its social and political development, however, it has been interpreted in a different way. In the last two decades we have also seen weaknesses in this idea of Pancasila. It has been used to restrict religion to five (since 2006 six) officially recognised religions and this reduction finally also has led to serious weakness in its role for inter-religious harmony and for true freedom of religion.
