Abstract The Pacific attracted global attention since the early twentieth century. In 1926, the well-known German geopolitician Karl Haushofer concluded that “the center of global power has moved from the Mediterranean in the Atlantic and on toward the Pacific.” But the Pacific did not necessarily embody the hope of future. Fear of geopolitical competition and racial conflicts on the Pacific theater resulted in the problematization of the Pacific that revealed empires’ anxiety. This research seeks to analyze how the inter-imperial relations—especially between the Japanese and US empires—shaped contemporary understandings of the Pacific.
