Paradise and Hell as Described in Popular Islamic Stories of Lanao, Philippines.

Kawashima Midori

This paper presents interim results of the research on popular Islamic stories of Lanao in the Philippines, which I have been conducting with my co-researchers in the Philippines and outside the country. It discusses the synopsis and characteristics of a popular Islamic story entitled Kabarolakirat (news of the hereafter), written in in Maranao language and printed in 1930s, with a special attention paid to its description of Paradise and Hell. I will then compare it with other versions of the same story, which were later printed in Lanao in the 1970s. An Islamic manuscript entitled Totolanko Nabi Muhammad (Story of the Prophet Muhammad), in the depository of the Gowing Memorial Research Center (Marawi City), will also be discussed.
By doing so, I will demonstrate the importance of comparing these popular Islamic stories of the Philippines with their counterparts in other parts of Southeast Asia, written in Malay-Indonesian, Javanese, Arabic etc., and invite specialists of Islam of Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Middle East, to jointly develop comparative study of Islamic literatures and kitabs within the region and beyond it.
