The discipline of area studies begins with each of you turning your attention to different cultures and societies and coming into direct contact with them. As you intellectually analyze the surprises and discomforts you may feel and wrestle with the unique logic of a society where our common sense does not necessarily work, the diverse aspects of different cultures will gradually come to light.
For this kind of academic struggle, we need various “weapons,” and in my case, history is the main one. It is a painful, but very rewarding and enjoyable task to create a new historical interpretation by reading and understanding the records of the past, sometimes documents that no one has used yet.
I hope that I can help you in some small way as you venture out into the waters of another culture.
