As globalization continues to increase interdependence and disparity, international cooperation is a duty for all of us as global citizens. However, “good intentions” do not always result in the “best” outcomes. Asymmetrical power relations between aid agencies and recipients and aid without a contextual understanding of the culture of the target areas bring a negative impact. Instead of pointing out what is not available, the professionals are expected to identify what is available and bring out the local people’s potential. I have learned that a respectful attitude and behavior are more important than knowledge through my mistakes in the field. Anyone, not only practitioners, can do international cooperation. Today, indigenous peoples or survivors of human trafficking who have been excluded from their community can participate in society. The citizens are expected to stand in solidarity with the movements. Based on the perspective of both social movements and development assistance. I am researching how international norms can be utilized in local contexts. Some of the lessons we are teaching provide hints for Japanese society. To increase the number of people passionate about seeing a world without conflict, violence, and poverty but who are also responsible for the steady work of negotiation and coordination, we offer you an opportunity for learning.
