My research interests lie in the international and domestic politics of conflict and peace. Conflicts over incompatible interests between actors are quite common phenomina, but domestic societies equipped with rules, institutions and norms can resolve those conflicts peacefully, and conflicts rarely lead to the use of violence. However, efforts to develop such rules, institutions and norms in the international community have not reached the necessary level, and many conflicts end up in violence. Moreover, once violence occurs, it can continue to have a negative impact on society for years and decades even after direct violence stopped, and the slightest trigger can lead to a recurrence. On the other hand, there are a wide range of entitites trying to resolve conflicts and build peace, including states, international and regional organizations, and civil society organizations, and some of them are making progress, albeit gradually. Thinking about conflict and peace requires a broad knowledge of politics, economics, law and institutions, as well as flexible and applicable thinking skills. I believe this is an important challenge for FGS students. I look forward to thinking about and discussing this challenging issue with you!
