What comes to your mind, when you hear the word “Africa”? A continent rich in nature, armed conflicts, poverty, and other problems that are covered in the news, smiling people, diverse and rich culture and lifestyle. Africa may seem like a continent far away from Japan, but in recent years, Africa is drawing increasing global interest. My specialty is the politics and history of Ethiopia and Eritrea, with special focus on the historical study of the relationship between nation and ethnic groups. I first became interested in Africa when the conflict and famine in Ethiopia were covered widely in the news. Why did conflicts occur in Africa, and what are the causes of the various problems that Africa is facing? Our Faculty aims to provide a deeper understanding of Africa by studying its history, politics, and society from multiple perspectives. Africa is not an isolated continent, but has a deep relationship with the world historically, politically, and through aid and support. Understanding Africa and its connections to the rest of the world with both local and global perspectives, we will be able to greatly enhance our understanding of international relations and world history.
