In the world of business, it is often said that it is important to have a “bird’s eye view” to see the overall picture, an “insect’s eye view” to see from multifaceted perspectives, and a “fish’s eye view” to read the flow of trends (originally, these are words of an economist Dr. Motoshige Itoh). It is not only in the world of business that perspective dynamism matters. Our lives are so dynamic that we can say everything around us is now intertwined with the whole world. The Faculty of Global Studies aims to cultivate perspectives that enable us to see through the dazzling complexity of these emerging developments. My speciality, anthropology, is a field that starts with a detailed view of the local lives of people around the world, and then looks up to consider the whole of the human species. It will give you hints on how to think starting from the parts to seeing the whole, whatever field you may be interested in, politics, economy or culture. In addition, the Middle East, which is my region of specialization, is not only a place where you can get a characteristic glimpse of today’s global trends, but also a place with along history and ancient traditions that will challenge your common sense to a good degree. Let’s think together about the past, present, and future of the world through the realities of Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
