留学を決断したことは、私の人生で最も良い選択の一つでした。私は3年次チェコ共和国のプラハに交換留学へ一学期行きました。元々異なる地域の歴史、文化、政治についてより深く学びたいと思い留学を決意しました。さまざまな学術的視点に触れながら単位を取得できることは、非常に効果的で充実した経験になると思いました。
もちろん、留学には費用がかかるため、それも大きな課題の一つです。しかし、上智大学の奨学金を受給することができ、月々の支給額によって宿泊費や生活費を賄うことができました。

To Global Perspectives

Deciding to study abroad was one of the best choices I’ve ever made. I applied for an exchange program in Prague, Czech Republic, during my third year because I was eager to learn more about history, culture, and politics from different regions. The opportunity to engage with diverse academic sources while earning credits made studying abroad an effective and enriching journey for me. 未知の地を選ぶことが、最高の決断になるかもしれない：

当初、私の第一志望場所はずっと夢見ていたパリでした。しかし、あえて未知の場所に飛び込むことを決めました。東欧という地域が私の目を引いたのは、歴史や政治に関心があったからです。プラハで学ぶことで、学問的な関心を深めるだけでなく、自分では想像もしていなかった新たな視点に触れることができると確信しました。
プラハは、中世の建築、共産主義の歴史、活気ある知的な雰囲気を持つ街として知られています。特に印象に残った授業には、「共産主義批判」「冷戦後のロシア外交」「イスラエル・パレスチナ関係」などがありました。ユダヤ系、ロシア人、そして共産主義時代を経験した親を持つ学生と意見を交わすことで、現代の国際問題をより深く、多角的に理解することができました。

Choosing an Unfamiliar Destination Might Be the Best Decision

Initially, my top choice was Paris—it had always been my dream to study there. However, I decided to take a chance on something unfamiliar and explore a completely new region. Eastern Europe caught my attention because of my interest in history and politics. I realized that studying in Prague would not only allow me to dive deeper into my academic interests but also expose me to perspectives I wouldn’t have encountered otherwise.
Prague itself is historically rich, with its medieval architecture, remnants of its communist past, and vibrant intellectual atmosphere. One of the most memorable courses I took included Critiques of Communism, Russian Post-Cold War Foreign Policy, and Israel and Palestine Relations. Discussing these topics with classmates from diverse backgrounds—including Jewish, Russian, and students whose parents had lived under communist rule—deepened my understanding of global challenges from multiple perspectives.

メディアを超えた実体験：

留学の大きな価値は、メディアを通してではなく、実際に現地の人々と交流し、現地の意見を聞けることです。スロバキア出身の友人が、「多くの人は共産主義を失敗した制度だと考えているが、貧しい家庭に生まれた人々にとっては、仕事が保証され、家族を養うことができた良い制度でもあった」と話してくれたことが印象的でした。冬の真っ只中に彼の故郷を訪れたことで、その言葉の背景をより深く理解することができました。ただ否定するのではなく、多様な意見を尊重することが大切だと実感しました。
そして、留学中にクラクフのアウシュヴィッツ強制収容所を訪れたことは忘れられません。ホロコーストについては事前に学んでいましたが、実際にその地を踏むことで、歴史の重みを肌で感じました。さらに、スロバキアとウクライナの国境都市を訪れ、雪の中に広がる難民キャンプを目の当たりにしました。ニュースで見るだけでは分からない現実でした。総合グローバルの学生として、こうした経験は私の社会意識をより具体的なものになりました。

Beyond the Media Narrative: Firsthand Experiences

One of the most valuable aspects of studying abroad was engaging in discussions that challenged mainstream media narratives. A Slovakian friend once told me that while many see communism as a failed system, for some people who grew up in poverty, it provided stability, jobs, and food security. Visiting my friend’s hometown in the middle of winter helped me understand the complexity of these perspectives—it’s not about agreeing or disagreeing, but about appreciating different lived experiences.
Outside of class, I traveled extensively across Eastern Europe, visiting Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia. One of the most impactful experiences was visiting Auschwitz Concentration Camp in Kraków. Though I had studied the Holocaust extensively, walking through the site where millions were murdered was a completely different and deeply emotional experience. Additionally, visiting border towns between Slovakia and Ukraine, where refugee camps were set up in the snow, made me more aware of current global crises beyond just news reports. As a Global Studies student, these experiences cemented my understanding of history and international affairs in ways that textbooks never could.

FGSで留学を目指す皆さんに伝えたいこと：

異文化の中で生活すること、新しい環境に飛び込むことは不安に感じるかもしれません。しかし、それを恐れるのではなく、成長のチャンスと捉えてください。もし迷っているなら、思い切って行動に移してみることをお勧めします。経験から学ぶことは多く、何もしないで後悔するより、行動して学ぶ方がずっと価値があります。
私が唯一後悔しているのは、カレル大学の教授達と積極的に交流しなかったことです。しかし、それを除けば、留学は本当に素晴らしい経験でした。もし留学先を決めかねているなら、東欧をお勧めします！新たな視点を得る絶好の機会になるはずです。

Advice for Future Applicants

Studying abroad can be daunting—new cultures, unfamiliar environments, and being far from home. But rather than seeing this as a challenge, view it as an opportunity for growth. If you’re unsure, my advice is simple: go. It’s better to take the leap and learn from the experience than to regret never trying. The only thing I regret is not engaging more with my professors at Charles University, but overall, I wouldn’t trade my experience for anything.
And if you’re unsure where to go—consider Eastern Europe! It’s an underrated yet incredibly rewarding destination for academic and personal growth. Studying abroad will challenge you, inspire you, and give you a perspective on the world that you can’t get any other way.
