Library Information

 The European Institute boasts a wide collection of academic resources related to European studies. Approximately 43,000 works of literature, documents, and audio/video software are classified and open for public use.
 Users can search by OPAC at Sophia University, and find them either at the Institute on the 7th floor, or in the library on the same floor.

 Some materials are stored in closed stack shelves. Please ask staff for assistance.

How to Use and Check-out

 Our Collections are open for public use.
Those without Sophia ID can borrow books at the European Institute Reception.

  • Users who have Sophia ID or library Membership can make check-out and return procedures at a Library counter on 1F.
  • Users without Sophia ID can make those procedures at the European Institute Reception.

   Mon-Fri 10:00-11:30 (closed 12:30-17:00)
   (Closed Days: Sat, Sun, National and University Holidays)

Sections

German Section

4,000 books mainly on German literature and linguistics, including the Uda and Uda Collections

Austrian Section

4,000 books on literature and culture donated by the Austrian Embassy

European Section

200 books, including introductory texts and latest information on European studies (The section was established along with the opening of the European Institute in 2007)

Swiss Section

6,500 books on Switzerland, mainly donated by the Swiss Consulate in Kobe and Pro Helvetia Foundation

Spanish Section

14,000 books on Spanish literature, history, linguistics, and art, donated by the former Spanish Embassy library

Spanish Civil War Section

6,500 books on Spanish Civil War, donated by the late Professor Juan J. L. Sopeña

Portuguese Section

1,700 books on Portugal, collected by the former Portuguese Institute

EU Section

850 books and documents of official publications

Others

Valuable musical scores, books and software of Spanish music, and European cinema DVDs are stored in the Institute, while journals/magazines can be found either in the Institute or Central Library 3rd floor.
