  • Faculty Spotlight Part I: Professor Yuko Otsuka, specialist in linguistics, Tongan and Polynesian Languages

    Professor Yuko Otsuka is an associate professor in the Department of English Studies at Sophia University, specializing in linguistics, Tongan, and Polynesian Languages. She was born and raised in Japan and graduated from International Christian University where she studied teaching Japanese as a foreign language.  In her third year of university she joined the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers and spent two years in Tonga teaching Japanese. It was that experience that inspired her future career in academics.     Recently our own Department of English Studies Chair, Professor Shinichi Izumi sat down with the student editors of Angles to discuss his new book, Thinking about Language Learning from the Perspectives of First and Second Language Acquisition Research (Second Language Acquisition, for short) (『第2言語習得と母語習得から「言葉の学び」を考える』 アルク選書、2016). Second Language Acquisition is the third in a series of books Professor Izumi has published.   • 英語学科生による卒業論文発表会

    1月21日、北米、アジアを専門分野とする4つのゼミ(小塩、石井、出口、飯島ゼミ)による卒論発表会が行われました。本学科では、卒論執筆は必修ではありません。しかし、自主的に執筆を選んだ学生は、2年(留学を含めると3年の場合もあり)ほどかけて、自分で見つけたテーマに関する研究論文(英語、1万単語以上)を書きあげます。発表会では、昨年12月初旬に無事卒論を提出した13名の学生が、その成果を披露しました。今回の発表では、環境、女性、移民・エスニック集団、教育、家族、マテリアル・カルチャーなど多岐にわたるテーマが取り上げられました。また、lowriders, greenwashing, 米国における従軍慰安婦像など、本格的な研究が行われていないユニークなテーマも見受けられました。特徴的だったのは、既存研究の枠組みや縛りから解放されたアプローチや視点が多くの発表で提示されたことです(下記、発表タイトル一覧を参照)。 発表を聞いている間、好井裕明著『違和感から始まる社会学』(光文社新書、2014)の冒頭のくだりを思い出しました。 「私は学部生の卒業論文を読むのが好きだ。彼らは、就職活動で多大な時間とエネルギーをとられながらも、自らの問題関心をもとに読んだり、調査したり、フィールドワークをしたり、聞き取りをしたりして、独自の成果を作り出す。  学問的水準などという厳しいことを言いだしたら、いろいろと批判できるが、粗削りな問題関心のもとで、いま自分ができる営みをがんばり、一つの“作品”としてまとめあげる。そのエネルギーと問題関心、彼の思索の軌跡が卒業論文のなかで嬉々として躍動しているのを見るのがこのうえもなく楽しいのだ。(8頁)」  実は、「作品」を作り上げるにあたり、執筆学生は、教員やゼミ生とともに、繰り返し議論を行い、原稿を読み合い、研究内容に磨きをかけていきます。その過程で、次第に教員対学生という関係は薄れ、研究者同士の繋がりが構築され、アカデミック・コミュニティが形成されていきます。そこでは、執筆学生たちの「躍動」が共有され、後輩たちの作品へと受け継がれていくのです。さて、来年はどのような作品が出来上がるのでしょうか。今から楽しみです。 発表者の皆さん、お疲れさま。そして、ありがとう。~発表タイトル一覧~History栗岡秀治 “The Positive Effects of Railroads and their Relations with National Parks in the United States: Through Alfred Runte’s Studies” 後藤優希 “Exploring Asian American Coalition and Division since the 1960s” 中戸川愛美 “The Experience of Japanese Americans in the Internment Camps during World War II: Its History and Contemporary Interpretations in the U.S. Society” Social Issues佐々木彩花 “Transnational Comfort Women Issues in the United States: From the Perspectives of Korean Americans and Other Asian Americans” 中村祐太 “Greenwashing in the Automobile Industry: A Website Analysis on General Motors and Toyota” Culture古賀梨花子“Exploring the Images of Black Female Body” 神原桃子“Africa in The Lion King: Whether African Aspects Were Considered Positive or Not”岡村政志“Lowriders Cultural <続きを読む>
  • Author Cynthia Levinson Discusses Writing and her Biography of Hillary Clinton

    On Friday December 16th, the Department of English Studies and the Institute of American and Canadian Studies sponsored an event with visiting author Cynthia Levinson.  Ms.  Levinson writes books for children and young adults that try to present issues of history and social justice in a way that makes them accessible to younger audiences.   More than 35 people attended the event and got to hear Ms. Levinson speak about her work as a writer and her recent biography of Hillary Clinton.  Ms. Levinson was a classmate of Hillary Clinton at famed Wellesley College and offered an insight into her early life that few people could.   The event was led <続きを読む>
  • 6th Annual John Nissel Speech Contest

    On November 19th, 2016, the 6th annual All Japan High School, John Nissel Speech Contest was held at Sophia University.  Twenty finalists gathered to deliver speeches on topics ranging from diversity, gender equality, social justice, climate change, and many others. This years speeches were particularly powerful and inspirational and the judges found it incredibly difficult to choose a winner from such a strong field of presenters.   The top 3 prize winners were: First Prize: Shiori Hirai from Aichi Perfectural Asahigaoka Senior High School  for her speech entitled “Believe in your Compass” Second Prize: Yuka Sashihara from Kobe College Senior High School for her speech               entitled “With One Step Forward” <続きを読む>

    On Friday December 16th, The English Studies Department and the Angles Journal Editors are pleased to host this event featuring book author Cynthia Levinson to discuss the personal journey of Hillary Rodham  Clinton and also share her own experiences as a professional writer/author.  Cynthia Levinson is an author of books for young readers, age six to fifteen. Two of her books have won multiple national awards, and one has been translated into Japanese (“Watch Out for Flying Kids,” released in November 2016).
