The Function of Television for Children and AdolescentsTakeo Furu
Monographs (1971) pp. 1–323
Today nearly all families in Japan have TV sets, and school children expose themselves to as many hours of TV as they have class hours in school.
This book is a research report on the function of TV in children’s leisure time. Subsidized by the Ministry of Education, the research took as subjects 3000 school children (aged 9,12, and 15) in a suburban area of Tokyo. The main objectives of this research were to discover: 1) why school children watch TV and how they view their own TV behavior; 2) the sociological and psychological differences between heavy TV-viewing and light TV-viewing children; and 3) the influences of TV on children’s knowledge and school work.
