Monographs (1971) pp. 1–112

The purpose of this work is to make a study of the achievements of early Japanologists in the field of translation of Japanese works, and to discern how early the Westerners began to study the Japanese language and make translations. For this purpose, standard bibliographies such as Pagès, Wenckstern, and Nachod were consulted to locate and identify early translations. Later bibliographies such as Borton and general studies of the early Japanese Christians and Japanese-Western intercourse up to 1868 were also consulted.
