The early modern Japan and nineteenth-century volumes for the original Cambridge History of Japan series, published more than three decades ago, were essential research and teaching library resources for a young scholar transitioning to graduate studies in the early 1990s. While too expensive to own personally, these important volumes became markedly easier to utilize once online versions were released in the 2000s. That development permitted students of Japanese history to begin systematically working through individual volumes and indeed the entire series without fear of hefty library fines (a feat I last performed just prior to the pandemic).
