Population Pressure and Economic Life in Japan by Ryoichi IshiiJ. B. Kraus

MN 1:1 (1938) p. 287

This book presents a rather comprehensive account of the manyfold aspects of Japan’s population problem. First the different historical stages of development before and after the Meiji Reformation (a well chosen term to include the spiritual rebirth of Japan) are traced on their respective social and economic background. MLch important information is embodied in those first three chapters. A special chapter IV has been devoted to describe old and new methods of estimating the Japanese Population. Sections V and VI deal with the regional and occupational distribution of population, give a well substantiated demographic analysis of the recent trends of fertility, mortality and an excellent summary of the various estimates of future general and working population. Chapter VII discusses frankly the knotty problem of the rural economic situation and its bearing upon the trend of population.
