Miura Bain occupies a special place among the many famous scholars of the late Tokugawa period because of his extremely wide inte rests and almost universal erudition. He was at the same time a profound scholar of Chinese literature and a student of philosophy, astronomy, economics and medical science. Further he was also a skilful painter and woodcarver.
