The first (MN 71:1, pp. 1–42), titled “Readings from the Bamboo Grove: A Translation of Sōgi’s Oi no Susami (Part 1),” includes an introduction placing Sōgi 宗祇 (1421–1502) within his artistic milieu and discussing his aims and modus operandi in authoring the 1479 poetic treatise, which is his most acclaimed essay.
